Here is the 15 member ODI squad announced by the BCCI for the Indian tour of the Windies.
Gautam Gambhir (captain), Suresh Raina, Parthiv Patel (wk), Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, S Badrinath, Rohit Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, R Ashwin, Praveen Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Munaf Patel, Vinay Kumar, Yusuf Pathan, Amit Mishra, Wriddhiman Saha (wk).
Some inclusions are questionable
Parthiv Patel:
Dinesh Karthik should have been the automatic choice as he has a better average than Parthiv,both in the ODIs as well as in T20s. Dinesh has played several match winning knocks for India.
Ishant Sharma:
Why was Ishanth selected ahead of Sudeep Tyagi, Ashok Dinda and Siddharth Trivedi? Infact, S. Trivedi has an economy rate of just over 3 runs per over and a runs per wicket average of 22 in first class games. I. Sharmas' average is 31 and his economy rate in ODIs is 5.44. Ishanth has struggled for a very long time on overseas tours. Trivedi would have been a good choice to test.
Vinay Kumar:
Why Vinay Kumar ahead of A. Mithun and Sreenath Aravind. Sreenath Aravind is an excellent lanky pace bowler as we have all seen in the IPL4. A. Mithun is a very good all rounder. Other than being branded as an Indian star Vinay Kumars' selection is not completely justified.
Wriddhiman Saha (wk).
When one has the services of Ambati Rayudu, why should W.Saha be picked? Rayudus' batting average in first class games is 42 and the IPL4.0 has shown he is capable of performing good quality keeping roles as well. More than Sahas' selection A. T. Rayudus omission is unfortunate and disappointing.
Amit Mishra:
Pragyan Ojha has proven to be a much better spinner than A. Misra. Even the WC squad had its elements of surprises when Piyush Chawla was included ahead of Ojha. Do the selectors have anything against Ojha? Ojhas' exclusion seems to be strange, especially considering that he is the best spinner amongst the trio of him, Misra and Chawla.
Every selection list has its share of debatable issues. There can be no justification provided to include these players ahead of their worthy counter parts whose names have also been mentioned. It is very evident that the selectors are selecting players with "brand names" rather than players who will add value. The most striking omissions are A. T. Rayudu and Siddharth Trivedi. But anyway let us hope that in the absence of Sachin, Sehwag, Dhoni and Zaheer Khan the team performs competitively and emerges victorious.
